Well, he may not look like Robert De Niro but Leonardo DiCaprio is in the same groove De Niro was when he hit it big.
Back in the day, “Raging Bull” and “Taxi Driver” catapulted a good actor into greatness and this was thanks to the Martin Scorsese-De Niro combination. There is no doubt that having Scorsese favor you will only bring about good things and DiCaprio is currently enjoying being Scorsese’s favorite. The two have created great films like “Gangs of New York” and “The Aviator” which were critically acclaimed. Now the latest offering from the duo also seems to be destined for greatness.
“Shutter Island” is based on a book by the same name and features DiCaprio as a detective who has to investigate murder on a remote island located near Massachusetts. What makes the whole thing creepier is the fact that the murder took place in a mental asylum. The movie is being compared to Scorsese’s “Cape Fear” which starred (surprise, surprise) Robert De Niro.
Scorsese sees working with DiCaprio as a natural process. He said that as with Harvey Keitel and De Niro, his previous favorites, he had developed a rhythm with DiCaprio which made the task of directing much easier. The relationship is working well for both men and the collaboration looks like it will not stop here. DiCaprio is rumored to be called up for a couple of upcoming Scorsese flicks, one of which is the life story of Frank Sinatra. Although nothing is confirmed at this point, it is unlikely that DiCaprio will turn down the offers made by his mentor.
