The Dark Knight Rises Earns $ 160.9 Million On Opening Weekend

Despite the much-publicized shooting in Colorado, the movie ‘The Dark Knight Rises” has gone on to gross $ 160.9 million, making it the largest opening ever for a 2-D movie.

A box office analyst for Hollywood.com, Paul Dergarabedian, puts these numbers in perspective, in saying, “Clearly, The Dark Knight Rises was on everyone’s minds. I think the American public showed they were not going to be scared away from the movie theatre by the actions of a lunatic.”

According to Warner Bros, the final installment of the Batman trilogy has even outdone its predecessor, The Dark Knight, which made box office history in 2008. Although, it did not meet box office expectations, slated at $ 170 to $ 200 million, it still has the distinction of being the third largest opening behind 3-D movies such as The Avengers and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.

The Dark Knight Rises made almost $ 19.1 million alone from its IMAX screenings, where tickets cost a little more than when viewed in 2-D. Another interesting statistic that shows how anticipated this movie was is based on the fact that most of the tickets were presales.

It sure looks like the movie is well on its way to make another $1 billion dollars, and is slated to make another $ 81 million dollars over the second weekend. However, even if the sales of tickets drop after the incident, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ virtually has no competition for the rest of the summer.
